HISTORIC PLACES PLAQUE UNVEILED AT OPEN HOUSE-METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH HIGHLIGHTED
Saturday's annual Memorial Day weekend Marquette Historical Society Open House was no regular affair on May 29.
While the Church Museum sees its regular share of visitors walk through and takin in the various displays, this year saw the Methodist Episcopal Church take center stage as a plaque recognizing the church's placement on the National Register of Historic Places was unveiled. Previously listed on the State of Wisconsin Register of Historic Places, through the work of Jean Winther, who completed extensive research into the history of the building during the application process, in addition to a collective team effort by Marquette Historical Society and Marquette community members, the Marquette Historical Society learned this past February that the building had been accepted on the National Registry.
During a special unveiling ceremony on May 29th, Marquette Historical Society President and Village of Marquette President Art Cybul spoke about the history of the area as well as the application process. Special guests during Saturday's ceremony included Wisconsin State Senator Joan Ballweg and State Representative Alex Dallman, who together presented a special declaration to the Marquette Historical Society, in addition to Peggy Veregin, coordinator of the National Register of Historic Places in the Wiscosnin Historical Society's division of Historic Preservation. The honor of unveiling the official plaque was given to Jean Winther, with plans to install the plaque on the building in the very near future.
