The exact identity of the girls standing in the back row is not known but may be as follows left to right: Leona Marquart or Gladys Marquart, 3 & 4 unknown, Meta Berndt, Jessie Marquart (tall), 7 & 8 girls unknown. The teacher on the right side of the photo is Mrs. Art Degener ? Irene Jahnke, wife of Walter Jahnke, also taught at this school during the later years of its operation.
According to Gilbert Henslin, the old school building was moved to the Loeffler farm a mile away and was used as a wood shed for many years before it was torn down by Walter Jahnke in 1975.
Marquette Historical Society would like to have more information as to when the school was no longer in operation and the names of students and teachers over the years.
A special thank you to the Gilbert Henslin family for the information and photos about the Maple Hill
Side School.
